Happy Victorious Woman Month!!

Annmarie Kelly, Professional Keynote SpeakerIt seemed like just one small thing that winter when I filed the paperwork. It was late April when it was approved. By year’s end, there it was listed in the McGraw-Hill Chase’s Calendar of Events:

International Victorious Woman Month

It was exciting in my little world! I celebrated by inviting friends, colleagues and neighbors to a potluck at my house. Who knew then what it could and would become.
Since then, not only do I celebrate it with my Victory Chicks Community, but so do others…all around the world! International Victorious Woman Month has prompted many local governments and companies to single out one woman or a group of women and publicly applaud their talents – in honor of Victorious Woman Month.
In addition, I’ve written articles and blog posts and, with the help of my friend Google, I’ve seen articles about Victorious Woman Month in Huffington Post, Blogher and other women’s sites, as well as on individual blogs. They talk about goals, self-care or some other good thing that Victory Chicks, like you, want in your life.
Whenever I see someone – besides me, and whom I don’t know – reference Victorious Woman Month, it’s really exciting. Sometimes it’s even in a language I can’t read – and that’s almost more exciting!
I’m sharing all that with you for two reasons:

  1. You don’t have to be a millionaire or one of Forbes most powerful women to make an impact. I’m not either one of those – not yet, at least ;-). Yet that didn’t stop me from doing the one small thing that created International Victorious Woman Month…or doing any of the other things that help me fulfill what I believe is my purpose. That is, helping Victory Chicks, like you, BE MORE – DO MORE –  HAVE MORE of a life you LOVE living.
  2. Remind you that you can do that – you can have more of a life you love living. You just have to take a step in that direction. It could be just one small thing, but it’s a step that puts you on a path. Then you take another step…and another. Those steps don’t have to be big ones. And EVERY step counts, no matter how small.

That’s what victory stretches are all about…small steps that take you out of your status quo, out of your comfort zone, and into that richer, fuller experience of the life you are born to live. And those are victories – even if they are the smallest, tiniest steps, they’re like muscle-building exercises. The muscle you build are your victory muscles
And, lord knows I understand this: some things stick and some don’t. The trick is that you just keep trying. Eventually, all the “sticky ones” add up and make a difference – for you, your family, your community… maybe even the world.
Over ten years ago, I did my first interview for my first book, Victorious Woman! Shaping Life’s Challenges into Personal Victories, with the amazing Jean Ott. Jean didn’t have an easy time of it in her earlier life. However, she was determined to be victorious in her life. She kept learning and growing. Eventually she broke through glass ceilings in corporate America. Then Jean started Women Unlimited, the women’s leadership company that has put thousands of young women on a path to success.
Jean had this piece of advice:

“It’s never too late to start a new journey;
it doesn’t have to be a big journey,
it can be a little one.
Just start it.
You can tell yourself ‘OK, I’m going to give this a shot.
If it doesn’t work, I’ll try something else’.
But start it.”

What is something you want to start but haven’t yet? What’s one small thing you can do to get it started?

Let me know at the Victorious Woman Project.  Share it, celebrate it, and ask for advice from me and other Victory Chicks

May this month be your MOST VICTORIOUS one of 2017!!

Victory, Energy and Starting Over

Starting over after 40 - midlife women

“I’ve lost it!”

Have you ever said that? Why? Were you feeling frazzled, overwhelmed or just plain out of ideas?

When frustration bubbles over and you ‘lose it’, what do you mean?

And what did you mean that you lost? The popular phrase implies you lost your mind; of course, you didn’t (though, in that moment, it might have felt like it).

Starting over after 40 on low energy is certain failure

In truth, what you probably lost was, what I call, your Personal Positive Focus (PPF), and it was probably because you were low on energy. Think of your life as though it’s a car and energy is the gas. When the tank is full, you can go anywhere and do anything. I’ve always maintained that, as long as there’s gas in your car, you’re never seriously lost. On the other hand, when the tank is empty, you’re stuck; you go nowhere. Relating that to your own life, think about this: how can you possibly get a healthy new start and advance your life if your running on fumes and sputtering toward empty? You can’t!

How do you refill your energy when it’s running low?

During these summer months, do what you can to fill your energy tank physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Here are three way the Victorious Woman Project can help you get energized:

  1. Look at the Victorious Woman’s Victory Blog for suggestions for each one.
  2. If you have questions, ask them at Kelly’s Cafe.
  3. Tell us how your energy’s doing this summer on the Victorious Woman’s FB page

We look forward to hearing from you!

February's Theme: Strategy

Strategies lay out a plan or method and a series of maneuvers designed to achieve a specific goal.  A strategy defines which actions you’ll take at each stage of a plan. A good strategy usually includes a “Plan B” in case something happens to thwart the initial plan.
One of the problems a woman faces when she chooses a goal is that she doesn’t make a plan that accommodates obstacles. And no matter what your goal, you can definitely expect something to get in your way. When you take the time to think a plan through, you are likely to come up with an obstacle or two that might include lack of money, a missing skill or certification or a missing network connection. When obstacles comes up, you can create a strategy to deal with it – as a part of the plan.  By doing that you will help yourself stay focused and on track. In addition, strategizing your way out or through an obstacle will save your energy for when you have to deal with the unknown obstacles – those oh-so-special “treats” that might come in the form of something like a government requirement or a toxic person.
This month I’ll be sharing strategies that you can plug into your plans, either in the workplace (SmartWoman@Work) or in your New Beginnings reinvention.
If you have strategies that have worked for you, let’s hear them. If you have questions, ask me in Kelly’s Cafe and I’ll answer.
Have a great month – plan smartly and live victoriously!

Are you Competent Enough to Start Over?

woman starting over

Now that you’re starting over and getting a second chance to live your best life, you probably wonder if you can do it. Well, the short answer is “of course you can!” But there is more…

In order to live well and be successful in your life, you must be competent.

Competence means possessing these three traits: skill, experience and confidence. So naturally, when you are first starting over, you don’t have all three. But if you understand The Competence Model you will have a better understanding of what you need and when – and you can give yourself both a break for not knowing everything and a pat on the back as you progress.

Here are the four stages of The Competence Model:

Starting Over Stage 1: Unconscious Incompetence

Unconscious Incompetence means you don’t understand or know how to do something and you don’t necessarily recognize the deficit. In other words, you don’t even know what you don’t know.

This is like your first day on a new job, your first sexual experience, when you become a mother for the first time or the first time you are living on your own. Remember when you were a kid and were learning how to drive? You didn’t know the first thing about what to do behind the wheel of a car. But you really wanted wheels, so you were motivated to learn.

Some people can stay at the unconscious incompetence stage for a long, long time.

In order to move to the next stage, you have to recognize that there is something that (1) you “don’t get” about your current situation and (2) you have to learn. How long you stay at the unconscious incompetent stage usually depends on how motivated you are to be competent in your situation and/or how fast you get frustrated.

The best way to move out of this stage is to decide on a goal or set a milestone in your life. And, if there is someone you trust, ask them if they notice something that might be one of your blind spots – you know, something that you can’t see but others do. When you do, you automatically shift into the next stage….

Starting Over Stage 2: Conscious Incompetence

Here you know something’s missing. You might not know what or you don’t know what to do to fill in the gap – but you know it’s something. You are consciously aware that you are incompetent in a situation. Remember how it was after you had your first driving lesson? Weren’t you suddenly aware of how much you didn’t know about driving? Who knew you had to think about all those things?

When it comes to their future well-being and success, some women choose to stay at the conscious incompetence stage. They know, for example, that they can’t handle their finances but decide that it’s too much time, trouble, or energy to learn. Or they know they’re not in charge of their life but would rather follow someone else – maybe because less scary to let someone else do it or maybe being a victim is just easier.

This is where you have a great opportunity for a victory stretch. A victory stretch happens when a woman chooses to love out of the comfort zone of this stage and onto the next stage – even when it’s challenging. The victory stretch is what makes the difference between a victim or surviving woman and one who is savvy and victorious.

Starting Over Stage 3: Conscious Competence

This happens when you know you know – the skill or behavior – and you can do it, but it takes a lot of concentration. Remember when you took your driving test? You had to concentrate on every little thing – getting into gear, getting used to how much pressure to put on the gas or brake, how and when to use the turning signal. You can do it but it takes your full concentration.

When you’re starting over, conscious competence could mean getting a new checking account and balancing your checkbook every month, or creating a budget and sticking to it. On a new job, conscious competence could be as simple as getting a new phone system and having to look at the printed instructions every time you want to get into your voicemail. Conscious competence takes thought at every stage. But in time you
develop…

Starting Over Stage 4: Unconscious Competence

Finally – you’ve had so much practice with a skill that it’s “second nature” and can be performed easily. Remember the days when you were just a “conscious competent” driver? Back then you probably couldn’t imagine that you could drive and do other things . . .eat, talk, yell at kids, etc. Now driving is like walking. . . you are competent without even thinking about what you are doing. As a result of unconscious competence, you can teach you daughter to drive or, at work, you might be the person chosen to mentor the new manager or teach a professional development class.

Throughout our lives we are always in one stage or another. Recognizing your level of competence when you are starting over can be a huge help in moving from lost and scared to confident and successful. Like anything, once you can name what’s missing and claim it, you can change it.
